Choose joy

“Joy does not simply happen to us.
We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.”

― Henri J.M. Nouwen

When I waved goodbye to my daughter on her way to work, I jumped up and down and waved frantically while the car sped away along the driveway. She most likely did not even have a look in the rear mirror.

I enjoyed it though. I noticed that I wave goodbye to my family members when they leave because I get joy from it. I don't particularly like them leaving (sometimes I do...), but something about flailing my arms around tugs on my heartstrings.

Studies have shown us that higher physical activity is significantly related to higher life satisfaction and happiness and certain movements create feelings of joy, including:

  • Jumping: Dynamic, vertical movements linked to excitement and joy.

  • Rising: Upward motions symbolizing optimism and positivity.

  • Spreading: Expansive gestures, such as opening arms, reflecting confidence and openness.

  • Light and Free Movements: Effortless, flowing motions promoting relaxation and playfulness.

  • Rhythmicity: Repeated, rhythmic movements evoke relaxation and positive affect through their predictable and flowing nature

Any of those speak to you?

How about adding one of them to your day and see what happens?

We might not always have a reason to be joyful, yet the benefits of joyful emotions are plentiful:

  • Enhanced Immune System: Positive emotions like joy strengthen immune function, helping the body better defend against illnesses and increasing resistance to disease

  • Improved Heart Health: Joy is associated with lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and improved cardiovascular function

  • Stress Reduction: Experiencing joy helps lower cortisol levels, relaxes muscles, and calms the nervous system, reducing overall stress

  • Increased Pain Tolerance: The release of endorphins during joyful moments can help improve pain tolerance and provide natural pain relief

  • Neurological Benefits: Joy triggers the release of positive neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins, which improve mood and mental wellbeing

  • Stronger Social Connections: Joy is contagious and helps build relationships, creating supportive social networks that contribute to emotional health

My invitation to you today:

  • Choose Joy

This is your time.

With my arms high up in the air
