WHATS REALLY IMPORTANT?

“Things which matter most
must never be at the mercy
of things which matter least.”

– Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We are spoilt for choice these days.

So many decisions are to be made in different areas of our lives.

How much are you guilty of procrastinating on the things that really matter?

I am.

Sometimes taking action on what really matters seems hard - and it is so much easier to do "something else" (think going for a walk or exercising versus swiping on your phone or signing up for the next new thing).

If we are lucky, there are moments when we get reminded of what really matters.

The last two weekends were like that for me.

Whilst we enjoy a quiet weekend, our past weekends were marked by meeting people for different reasons in different places - and all warming our hearts.

Some friends and family members we met to simply enjoy ourselves, some we met to mourn together, to support our team, jump into the freezing ocean, or to support people we have never met before who are impacted by the effects of a natural disaster. We learned together, laughed and cried together and felt alive.

Those actions truly mattered.

Last week I started one of my online mindful yoga classes with a short contemplation on the topic of "What is really important?".

The busyness of our lives makes it difficult to see what truly matters.

One example is an argument with a loved one - we may not see what is important and try to win the argument to please our controller saboteur. Alternatively, we could explore what is really behind the argument and nurture the trust in our relationship by mutually creating a solution that is a win for everyone. Yes, it needs practice and a moment to think about "What is really important?".

You may want to ask yourself, what is important in relation to:

  • your family

  • your friends

  • your mental, physical and emotional health

  • your financial health

  • your growth or profession

  • your leisure or "me" time

  • your environment

If you took the time to contemplate on that - in what areas are you procrastinating or charging ahead stressed instead of on acting with wisdom? What may the long-term impact of it be?

Maybe you realise it is important to you to spend time with friends, but you never get round to organise something. What is the smallest, but significant enough thing to do? Maybe identifying a time in your calendar - celebrate.

Maybe you realise your vitality is important to you, but spend your days mostly sitting. What is the smallest, but significant enough thing to do? Maybe to get off your chair right then and walk on the spot - celebrate.

My invitation to you today:

  • Take a moment to consider what is important to you: What would you not want to be without?

  • How can one small action today nourish that?

This is your time.

With appreciation to what matters to me

Yours kindly

Mel
