Bubbles
When the children were little, one sure way of getting their attention was blowing bubbles.
It is quite extraordinary how something made of mostly air creates awe and wonder.
Be it enjoying a bubble bath, drinking a glass of bubbly (soda water?), or observing seafoam or bubbles in a pond - they can be whispers of joy.
I contemplated why that might be - maybe because they are only temporary. Maybe because they take on the colour of light. Maybe because they are fragile, yet they float, fly and drive upward - even when in contact with much stronger elements.
We may want to hold on to them - but we can't - they are fleeting. A great way to mindful and acknowledge impermanence. Nothing ever stays as it is - wanting to hold on only causes us grief. We may as well enjoy the moments as they arise.
Yesterday I had the pleasure to enjoy some bubbly drinks with wonderful people. We danced, laughed and conversed. Whilst the moment is gone, I will cherish the memories. I choose to hold on to them.
Other thoughts we may prefer to let go of - bubbles can help!
Here is a breathing exercise on bubbles.
The bubble breath:
1. Sit or lie down comfortably.
2. Notice your body from head to toe. Just notice.
3. Now bring your attention to your breathing. Just notice, no need to change your breathing pattern. Maybe try:
-notice the temperature of air on the inbreath and on the outbreath
-notice the movement in your body related to breath
4. Once you have done that for a moment, try this: each time you breathe out, imagine a flow of bubbles leaving your body, taking with them unwanted thoughts, tensions, stress, fears, etc. - whatever it is you want no longer to hold on to. What colour do you want to give those bubbles? Maybe the colour of the rainbow?
5. Keep coming back to this visualisation - of bubbles filled with what you want to let go off leaving your body with every outbreath - whenever your mind is wandering.
6. Now create your inbreath as some sort of light or energy that is nourishing you, bringing in calmness, quiet, peace or whatever it is you might be needing at the moment.
What colour do you want to give this incoming energy? Maybe a white streaming light or a golden glow?
7. Keep going however long feels right for you - in whatever way feels right for you.
My invitation to you today:
Let bubbles brighten your day. What may be fleeting, but worth noticing today?
This is your time.
With wonderous thoughts bubbling up
Yours kindly
Mel
